Typically, Koh Phangan is famous for its full moon parties however, the natural beauty of the island is far better than the wild parties it offers. You don't have to be a party animal to enjoy this tropical paradise. I've put together my route of hidden treasures and popular spots across the island so simply hire a motorbike and explore!
Hiring a motorbike
I usually hire motorbikes from the hostels I stay at or I'll check out the top rated motorbike rentals on TripAdvisor/ Google Reviews.
When hiring your bike, make sure a thorough check of the bike is completed by the hire store beforehand, and point out any marks or scrapes if they're missed as you don't want to be charged for it when you return the bike. I'd also recommend taking pictures of the entire bike before you set off to have proof of the bike before using it. Another key element to check is the brakes, make sure they work properly. Helmets should be provided with the bike just ensure they fit properly and it is the law to wear one. You will need to put a deposit down for the bike either your passport or cash so make sure to have that with you.
Once you have your bike you'll need to add fuel as majority of the time you hire a bike it'll be empty. You can either visit a petrol station which Koh Phangan has an abundance of or stop by a shop selling petrol in glass bottles. You'll get a better price at a petrol station and it's easy - simply pull up and say how much money you want to spend, usually around 30-40 Baht and the person will top the bike up with petrol for you.
Okay now you've got your bike, you're ready to explore this beautiful island!
The route
Starting points – 3 options:
Phaeng Waterfall
Secret Mountain
Paradise Waterfall
Phaeng Waterfall – In this jungle setting you have the chance to see 2-3 gushing waterfalls. However, in July the waterfalls are dry due to the lack of rainfall. I made this mistake and it really isn’t worth seeing dry rocks. If you want to get some waterfall action make sure to visit after rainy season.
Zen Beach – The turning for this beach can be easily missed so make to turn by the language school. Park your bike up in the designated area and the walk towards the beach opening. This long stretch of sandy shores will make you feel ‘zenned’.
Mama Pooh’s Kitchen – Feeling hungry? Fill yourself up on amazing homemade Thai food. Simply write your order on the form and hand to the waiters. The best part is you can specify your spice intensity, so for those like me who can’t handle the Thai spice you can just add a little spice to your meal.
Secret Beach – The not-so-secret beach is the perfect chill out spot with a wooden swing for those insta-worthy pics. You also have the option to dine at the beach bar or have a relaxing massage. I highly recommend trying a massage here as I thoroughly enjoyed mine while looking out to the sea.
Mae Haad Beach - The most popular beach on the island is Mae Haad as you can access Koh Ma island by the strip of sand between. The colour of the water on either side are different colours due to differences in tides. If you’re up for an adventure you can explore Koh Ma, if not just sit back and enjoy the beach.
Wangsai waterfall – A less popular spot in the island however, this waterfall is thought to be up and coming. It’s a few minutes’ drive from Mae Haad beach so it’s definitely an easy one to visit. There is a cute little bar here too so rehydrate and take in the views.
Three Sixty bar – Enjoy a refreshing drink while taking in the views from this high viewpoint showcasing the islands beauty. You feel on top of the world here, make sure to take the staircase up to get even higher. Insider info - To take photos here you must purchase a drink first.
Malibu Beach – Seek more of the sunshine on this smaller beach scattered with palm trees, hammocks and swings. It’s also a great spot to get pictures of the small marine with mountains in the background.
Paradise waterfall – A favourite with the locals, this waterfall is fit with rope swings for hours of fun. There is only a short walk from the carpark to the water which is handy for those who aren’t up for a long hike.
Secret Mountain – A foodie spot with an incredible view of the island’s beauty. I’d recommend starting here in the morning to fill up on a tasty breakfast or finish the day by unwinding with a drink and taking in the beautiful sunset. The Secret Mountain is located on top of a steep hill so be careful driving the bike if you’re not experienced.
