Are you setting off on your first backpacking trip and not sure what you need? Here is my list of essentials you shouldn’t leave home without:

1) Flat packing rucksack

Getting the right rucksack is the first step to successful backpacking. It’s much easier to use a rucksack that allows you to pack flat compared to those that are top loading. The best of bunch is Osprey’s Fairview for ladies and Farpoint for men. I’ve been travelling with the 70L bag for 2 months and I can’t fault it. The rucksack comes with a smaller bag that detaches and can be used as a day rucksack. I highly recommend this rucksack for first time travellers.

2) Packing cubes

For quick and efficient packing use packing cubes as it will keep your rucksack organised and neat. It will stop you from over-packing to begin with and will make moving from location to location effortless. I really love the Amazon basic range as they are durable and well-size in comparison to my Mountain Warehouse cubes which are already breaking.

3) A microfibre towel

Staying in hostels you don’t always get given a towel, so to save on space bring a microfibre towel. They are light, compact and quick drying, perfect for when you’re constantly on the go. I use a Mountain Warehouse large towel which works perfectly for me but you can buy these in any outdoor shop or online.

4) The right bank cards

When travelling abroad having the right bank cards is crucial. I use Starling bank as there are no card fees abroad or ATM charges. Plus, in the app you can easily lock your card if you lose it and help is always available 24/7. Starling also allows you to split payments with other people which makes travelling with friends and partners much easier. Another recommendation would be to travel with a credit card as sometimes you’ll need it for hotels or to hire cars. Credit cards are good if you need money in an emergency, for example if you need to go to hospital or book a last-minute flight.

5) A bumbag

Keep your valuables safe by wearing a bumbag as you’ll never lose sight of your personal belongings. A bumbag can also help keep your arms free when you’re out and about exploring. Any style of bumbag works just make sure it’s durable enough and the zip won’t break easily. I purchased this one in a market in Vietnam for a very good price.

6) Pens & Passport holder

Keep your passport and travel documents safe in a passport holder. Mine is from from Amazon, you can find it here. It may seem obvious, but always carry a pen on you as you never know when you’ll need it. It’s especially crucial when you’re flying to different countries as you will need to fill out landing cards or custom forms on the plane, helping you to beat the queues at passport control.
